This painting explores materiality. All paintings have history, because painting is a a time-based process. But in this painting I am exploring the visible and material qualities of paint and the painting's narrative process. I wanted the start, the middles and the end of the painting all to be in the visual field, but to not necessarily know which is which,, immediately.
This idea aligns more and more with my core inspiration for painting, which is how our early experiences in life profoundly impact our personalities and future identities. These are woven together in complex ways that are not necessarily easy to unpick, but create a perceivable 'whole' nevertheless, along the way. This painting is a nod to this process.
