This painting is about how we weave our own realities over time, threading numerous timelines together to build a 'now' that goes way back in history. We are a product of our recent ancestors, our current social interactions and our past upbringing. These collide to create who we are. We bring our past into our present constantly - this is what fascinates me about life, and also about painting, a time-based process.
Here, water is used to lift off the current surface paint to look below that surface to the painting's previous lives, again and again. The black, which appears as the background, the deep distant past, is in fact the last layer to be applied. 100cm x 100cm acrylic on cotton canvas.
