When the days and nights are getting progressively hotter, living in the city can feel, on the one hand, claustrophobic and sweltering, and on the other joyfully colourful and vibrant. This painting is an expression of both of those feelings. Painted over the course of a very hot summer, the colours and techniques used were chosen to conjure up the richness, closeness and heat of a large bustling city - in this case London.
